WE ARE FASCINATED BY OPEN, FLEXIBLE SPACES WITH NATURAL LIGHT AND MINIMAL IMPACT ON THE ENVIRONMENT; IMAGINATIVE SPACES FITTING THE NEEDS OF MODERN LIFE AND ROOTED IN THEIR CONTEXT AND SURROUNDINGS.
By “architecture” we mean the potential to transform and improve our surroundings through intelligent, creative and environmentally conscious design.

design ethos

Of the many factors which affect our designwork, function, local character, budget, sustainability and the ideas of our clients play pivotal roles throughout the design process.
We believe that good design must work well in many ways. Spaces must be equally uplifting, economic and practical. Materials should relate to the history and character of the place where they are used whilst making the most of modern means of fabrication.
All budgets are finite – the design question lies in resolving how to distribute the available means to achieve the best and most long-lived results. So overall, the economy of means should permit high quality in those parts of the building where it matters most.
We design our buildings to be sustainable in equivalent ways to traditional architecture – natural materials, careful orientation, shading are all fundamental to our schemes from the start. The most suitable modern technologies are then chosen to enhance the building’s comfort, performance and architecture.
The specific combination of client and site make each project utterly unique so we encourage our clients to take an active role throughout the design process. We find it both creative and rewarding that our design solutions always arise out of dialogue with our clients.

Sebastian specialises in designing contemporary private houses and reforming historic buildings.

Having trained at the University of Cambridge and Barcelona School of Architecture (ETSAB-UPC), he has practiced in Catalonia and the Balearics for the last 14 years, developing the studio to focus on sustainability and place-specific design. During this time, the self-sufficient house in a fig orchard has been awarded the Mallorca Architecture Prize for best house by the Balearic Chapter of Architects. Finalists included Pritzker prize winner Alvaro Siza and Juan Herreros.

His interest and understanding of sustainability began through living on a sailing boat, where periods of self-sufficiency require using the absolute minimum of means, and total adaptation to one’s surroundings and climate.

Having received the top award in his Masters he went on to read his doctoral thesis in architectural design at Barcelona School of Architecture, his professional work and academic research center around how architecture relates to its environment and context. He has written about and drawn his experiences of architecture and cities throughout the Mediterranean and has published articles and a book. He has been interviewed in the Spanish Press and on Channel 4 in the UK.

He currently teaches architecture and architectural history at La Salle school of Architecture Barcelona and at other design schools in Barcelona.

From designing the seminal tower penthouses at The Barbican in London with Chamberlin, Powell and Bon, to Restaurants for Forte, we have worked on a wide variety of public and private projects in the UK from education to health.

Over the last 20 years we have focused on residential architecture, designing award winning homes in Mallorca and Catalunya.

Originally founded in the UK by Tony and Kate Harris, the studio in Mallorca is now directed by Sebastian Harris. We are registered architects in both the UK and Spain with established professional experience in both Northern and Mediterranean cultures.
