ABOUT THE PRACTICE

The fundamental role of space, light and context forms a connecting thread throughout the 40 years of the practice’s history in Spain and the UK.

Since the beginning our design interests have centred around open, flexible, sun-lit spaces connecting intelligently between interior and exterior, both in private houses but equally in public education and health projects; our work on public and private housing has developed our interest in imaginative spatial organisation to fit the changing needs and aspirations of contemporary life – designing the first large self-build public housing scheme in the UK; while our work with listed heritage buildings has focused our attention on working creatively with context and place.

Following their original work on the London Barbican Centre and Guild Hall, Tony and Kathryn founded Harris Architects & Designers in the UK in 1971, moving the practice to the Balearics in 2000.

In the Balearics, Harris Architects and Designers focus principally on residential architecture and became prominent with the completion of a self-sufficient country house set amongst fig trees in the South of Mallorca, which won the Balearic Chapter of Architects COAIB Award for best house 2007-10.

The award recognises ‘the best residential architecture in Mallorca’, in competition with internationally aclaimed architects including a Pritzker Prize laureate and RIBA Gold medalist, Alvaro Siza.

Since then Sebastian, current director, has continued to develop these ideas further, incorporating reasearch and teaching with design work. They have completed new and refurbishment projects across the island, each with widely varied sites, sizes and budgets.

The practice is currently working on both contemporary residential projects and historical buildings in Mallorca and Catalunya. These include projects in Unesco World heritage areas; new private houses in Pollensa and historic buildings in Calvia, the South of Mallorca and in the foothills of the Pyrenees.
