Harris Architects design renovation and conversion projects in historic, catalogued and traditional buildings. We create sensitive renovations or total conversions of old buildings respecting, and where possible, intensifying the character of the existing building fabric. We provide surveys and complete design and planning services for existing and protected buildings.

DESIGN STRATEGIES FOR OLD BUILDINGS

When working on old buildings, we take particular care to understand the fabric of the existing building – its history, and changing uses, as well as its current physical condition.

Every project is entirely different, however as a general principle, with old buildings we attempt to intervene as minimally as possible to achieve the maximum effect for the minimum of means. We aim to maintain the existing as far as possible, whilst creating new spaces, circulation and conditions of light and warmth.

We have worked on numerous protected and listed buildings in Spain and the UK, as well as on projects in highly protected landscape settings. We have good relations with the Council of Mallorca Heritage department, and other official bodies concerned with protecting the built environment. Our clients have included the National Trust besides many private owners. Our experience also includes being advisers to both English Heritage and the Arts Council of Great Britain, as well as teaching preservation of ancient buildings at Barcelona School of Architecture.
