Complete refurbishment of a cliff-top house. Recently completed.
We work across the northeastern regions of Catalunya, principally Costa Brava, Girona province and Barcelona.
We specialise in private residential projects, focusing on new houses and refurbishments as well as reformations of historic and protected buildings. Our new projects have received significant recognition in Spain and abroad (Prize, Houses by the Med…), whilst our experience with protected historic buildings includes work with both English Heritage and the Arts Council of Great Britain.
We offer complete architectural services throughout all stages of the project process, from surveys, site investigation and planning consultation to total design, including architectural, interior and landscape design. We also supervise all aspects of financial management, site supervision and project management as part of a single coherent approach to all of our projects.
We insist upon high-quality, thoughtful design in all of our work. Whilst scale and budget may vary widely across our projects, commitment to thoughtfulness, careful research and design originality are always fundamental to our approach. Consequently we always carry our projects through from conception to completion, leading the entire project process from initial site analysis to construction, maintaining an unbiased, continuous and coherent direction across all aspects of the scheme and throughout its various different stages.
Harris Architects & Designers was founded in the UK 40 years ago, and relocated to Spain in 2000. Since then the practice has worked in Mallorca until expanding to Catalonia and the Costa Brava in 2012. The practice has worked on for private clients including Trust House Forte and the National Trust, as well as housing associations, award-winning self-build schemes and health-care and education projects.
As chartered members of both the Royal Institute of British Architects, and the Balearic Chapter of Architects, we offer a breadth of professional experience and expertise bridging both cultures. Anthony has been a Historic Buildings Assessor appointed by English Heritage and also an adviser to the Arts Council.
In Catalonia we maintain close contact with the major schools of architecture, through teaching and research. Teaching recent workshops on landscape with Pritzker Prize winners, RCR architects, in Garrotxa and a Mediterranean urbanism workshop in Venice in connection with the Catalan Pavillion at the Venice Bienale 2018.

Harris Architects specialises in designing contemporary houses. Our designs aim to connect with the qualities of place which are unique to each site. Our new houses are designed from the perspective of sustainability and economy of means. Our work on historic buildings focuses on revealing the underlying character of existing buildings and the subtle relationships with place which have gradually evolved over long time periods.
Our new projects and refurbishments have received awards for their designs, and adapt to their settings combining both contemporary and vernacular aspects to their designs.
Our ongoing work with historic buildings focuses on re-evaluating old buildings, rationalising past accretions, bringing them up to modern standards, whilst reshaping their relationship to built context, landscape, climatic conditions and views.
